1. Start With the Faders
Getting a clean mix isn't always about using more EQ, compression or advanced processing.
Sometimes the problem is much simpler.
The wrong elements are too loud.
You can spend hours cutting frequencies, adding dynamic EQ and trying different compressors, but if several sounds are competing at similar levels, the mix will still feel crowded.
A small fader move can sometimes do more than another five plugins.
Let's look at why.
Before you start making detailed EQ decisions, listen to the basic volume balance of your track.
Which element is supposed to be the focus?
Is it the lead?
The vocal?
The bassline?
The drums?
Not everything can be at the front of the mix at the same time.
This is one of the most common problems I hear in unfinished productions. Every sound has been made loud because the producer wants every sound to feel important.
The kick is loud.
The bass is loud.
The leads are loud.
The chords are loud.
The effects are loud.
When everything is pushed forward, nothing really stands out.
Try pulling the faders down and rebuilding the balance from the most important elements. You may be surprised by how little processing you actually need.
2. Louder Doesn't Always Mean Better
When you're working on a sound for a long time, it's very easy to make it louder without noticing.
You add a plugin and the sound becomes slightly louder.
It feels clearer.
You add some saturation and it becomes louder again.
Now it feels more powerful.
Then you boost a frequency with an EQ and suddenly it seems to cut through the mix.
But are you hearing better processing?
Or are you simply hearing more volume?
Our ears naturally tend to prefer the louder signal in a quick comparison. This can make almost any processing decision feel like an improvement when the output level has increased.
Always compare your processing at a similar perceived level.
If a plugin only sounds better because it made the signal 2 dB louder, it may not actually be helping the mix.
3. Frequencies Don't Need to Be Completely Separated
There is a common idea that every element needs its own frequency range.
Real mixes don't work like that.
A lead, pad, vocal and chord progression can all contain information in the midrange. That doesn't automatically mean you need to remove large parts of each sound with EQ.
Overlap is normal.
The problem starts when several sounds overlap in frequency, time and level without a clear hierarchy.
If your lead and chords occupy a similar range and are playing together at almost the same volume, the lead may struggle to stand out.
You could boost the lead.
You could cut a hole in the chords.
Or you could simply lower the chords slightly.
Suddenly the lead sounds clearer without changing the lead at all.
That is the power of relative level.
4. One Sound Can Become Louder Without Moving Its Fader
Imagine you have a lead and a pad playing together.
The lead feels buried, so your first reaction is to make it louder.
But perhaps the lead is already at the right level.
Try lowering the pad by 1 or 2 dB instead.
The lead will now feel louder, even though you haven't touched its volume.
This matters because continuously pushing elements up creates another problem. Eventually, the entire mix becomes too loud and starts running into the master limiter.
You lose headroom.
The limiter starts working harder.
Transients become less controlled.
And the mix may feel smaller rather than bigger.
Sometimes the best way to make one sound stand out is to turn something else down.
5. Muddiness Can Be a Level Problem
Muddiness is normally associated with an excessive buildup in the low mids.
That is often true.
A bass, pad, reverb, low lead and percussion loop can all contribute energy to the same general area. When that energy accumulates, the mix can lose separation and definition.
EQ can help remove information that isn't useful.
But EQ isn't always the first answer.
Sometimes one of those elements is simply too loud.
A pad might sound warm and balanced on its own, but if it's too prominent in the full mix, its low-mid information can dominate everything around it.
You could remove a large amount of body with EQ.
But then the pad might start sounding thin.
Lowering it slightly may preserve its character while reducing the buildup in the complete mix.
Before cutting frequencies, ask yourself:
Does this sound contain too much of that frequency?
Or is the entire sound simply too loud?
Those are two different problems.
6. Use EQ After the Balance Makes Sense
This doesn't mean EQ isn't important.
It is.
If a sound contains low-frequency energy that isn't contributing anything useful, remove it.
If two important elements have resonances in the same area, a small EQ adjustment can create separation.
If a lead is harsh or a pad has too much low-mid information, correct it.
But EQ works better when the basic levels are already close.
Otherwise, you may make aggressive frequency cuts to compensate for a sound that is 3 dB too loud.
Then, when you eventually correct the volume, the sound becomes weak and unnatural because you've already removed too much information from it.
Set the general balance first.
Then use EQ to solve the problems that remain.
7. Compression Doesn't Replace Volume Balance
Compression can control peaks, change the envelope of a sound and make its level feel more consistent.
But it doesn't decide how important that sound should be in the mix.
That is still your job.
If a lead is too loud, compressing it won't necessarily put it in the right place. It may just give you a more consistently loud lead.
The same applies to drums.
A percussion loop that is dominating the groove might not need more compression. It may just need to come down.
Compression is particularly useful when the internal level of a sound is unstable. Some notes might be disappearing while others jump out too much.
But if the complete signal is sitting too far forward, start with the fader.
Do not use a compressor to avoid making a simple volume decision.
8. Build a Static Mix
One useful approach is to create a static mix before getting too deep into processing.
A static mix is the basic balance of the track using mainly volume and panning.
Start with the most important elements.
In electronic music, that might be the kick and bass.
Bring in the drums.
Then add the main musical elements.
After that, introduce the supporting sounds, effects and atmosphere.
At every stage, ask whether the new element is supporting the track or taking attention away from something more important.
You don't need to remove every plugin from a production that is already underway. The idea is simply to stop processing for a moment and focus on the relationship between the levels.
If the track starts feeling cleaner with nothing more than small fader adjustments, you've found part of the problem.
9. Listen Quietly
Listening at a lower monitoring level can make volume problems much easier to identify.
At high volume, almost everything feels powerful.
The bass feels bigger.
The kick feels stronger.
The leads feel more exciting.
This can hide an unbalanced mix.
Turn your monitors or headphones down until the track is playing quietly but still clearly.
Which sounds remain present?
Can you still understand the main idea?
Does the lead disappear?
Are the hi-hats suddenly dominating everything?
Is the kick much louder than the bass?
At low monitoring levels, the hierarchy of the mix often becomes much more obvious.
If the important elements still work and the supporting elements stay in their place, your balance is probably moving in the right direction.
10. Automate the Hierarchy
A sound doesn't need to stay at exactly the same level for the entire track.
The role of an element can change.
A pad may need to sit further back during the drop but become more present in the breakdown.
A lead might need a small lift when the full arrangement enters.
A percussion loop might work during one section but become distracting when more elements are added.
This is where volume automation becomes incredibly useful.
Instead of forcing one static fader position to work across the complete arrangement, make small adjustments depending on what is happening around it.
These moves don't need to be dramatic.
Sometimes an automation of 1 dB is enough to keep the focus in the right place.
The listener probably won't notice the fader moving.
They will simply feel that the mix makes sense.
11. Stop Making Everything Important
A clear mix has a hierarchy.
Some elements lead.
Some elements support.
Some elements are almost felt more than heard.
This can be difficult because we become attached to the sounds we create. If you spent an hour designing a texture or percussion loop, you naturally want people to hear it.
But its role may be to add movement in the background.
It doesn't need to be obvious.
A supporting element can still contribute to the track while sitting 5 or 10 dB below the main idea.
Try muting it.
If the track loses something, the element is doing its job.
Now bring it back and lower it until you only just start to miss it.
That can be a much better position than making sure every detail is clearly audible.
12. Check the Balance Against a Reference
Reference tracks aren't only useful for checking EQ and loudness.
They can also help you understand level relationships.
Choose a professionally released track that is close to your genre and arrangement.
Listen to how far forward the kick feels.
How loud is the bass compared with the kick?
Where are the leads?
How noticeable are the pads, percussion and effects?
You may discover that the supporting elements in a professional mix are much quieter than you expected.
Pay particular attention to dense sections.
When everything is playing, which elements still dominate?
That tells you something about the hierarchy of the production.
Always level-match the reference before comparing. If the reference is significantly louder, it will naturally feel clearer, bigger and more exciting.
The Most Important Thing
Volume doesn't replace sound selection, arrangement, EQ or compression.
But it should normally come before complicated processing.
A sound can have the perfect EQ curve and still be too loud.
It can be well compressed and still occupy too much attention.
It can sound impressive in solo and still destroy the balance of the complete track.
Before adding another plugin, move the fader.
Listen to what happens around the sound.
You may not need to make the lead louder.
You may only need to make everything around it slightly quieter.
And you may not need to remove another 5 dB of low mids from your pad.
You may only need to turn the pad down.
A good mix is not about making every element sound as big as possible.
It is about deciding which elements need to feel big, and giving everything else the right level to support them.
